American geologist, academic and progressive. He served as president of the University of Wisconsin (UW) in Madison, Wisconsin, from 1903 to 1918. Eponym of Van Hise Rock in Rock Springs, Wisconsin.
Dr. Charles Richard Van Hise was born on 29 May 1857 in the town of Fulton, Rock County, Wisconsin. His parents were William and Mary Van Hise. He married Alice May Polly (Bushnell) Ring in 1881 and they had three children.
Charles passed away from complications of a minor surgery to treat a nasal infection on 19 Nov 1918, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
He was buried in Section 34, Lot 031, Grave 2 of Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison, Wisconsin.[1]
